Introduction / History

The Mpuon, also known as Bunda or Mbuun, are a Bantu people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo living largely in Idiofa and surrounding territories in what was Bandundu Province. Their ethnic identity has grown over generations through oral traditions and ties to neighboring Bantu groups, and their language, Mbuun, reflects deep roots in Central African culture and history.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Mpuon life centers on agriculture in rural villages where families cultivate crops such as millet, cassava, maize and plantains, and men and women share field and fishing responsibilities in seasonal rhythms. Extended families often live together, and cooperation is important for planting, harvesting and preparing meals of staples like fufu with stews of fish or greens. Community celebrations for weddings, harvests, and church gatherings are marked by music, dance and shared feasts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Mpuon identify with Christianity, particularly Roman Catholic traditions introduced during colonial times, and Christian festivals and practices are part of community life. While Christianity is dominant, echoes of ancestral respect and cultural customs still shape perspectives, though formal biblical witness and discipleship remain limited among them according to mission sources.

What Are Their Needs?

Mpuon believers long for deeper spiritual maturity and for Christ's followers among them to grow in love and obedience, becoming effective witnesses to the gospel in daily life. Life in rural settings can be hard with challenges in income, healthcare and education, and holistic gospel engagement that brings hope, reconciliation and practical help would strengthen families and communities. Scripture in their heart language and vibrant local church leadership would help translate faith into transformed life.

Prayer Items

Pray that Mpuon Christians will be grounded in the word, bold in sharing Christ with friends and family, and united in love.
Pray for peace, physical provision and access to basic services such as health and education in rural areas.
Pray that God would raise up faithful workers among the Mpuon who will disciple others and plant churches that reflect the beauty of Christ's kingdom.
Pray for the faithful translation and distribution of the complete Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Mbuun language.
Pray asking God if he would use you to faithfully preach the gospel, teach the Bible, and make disciples in Africa.
